AP Art History Chapter 4 Study Guide

Define or identify and briefly state the importance of each of the following for understanding the art of the ancient Agean:
Arthur Evan an Englishman, who began to work at Knossos. He uncovered a palace that resemble a maze.

Homer He written the “Iliad” which is the finest epic poem.

Heinrich Schliemann a wealthy German businessman, who uncovered some of the very cities Homer named. He found a lot of evidence of civilization in Mycenae.


 CYCLADIC ART


 1. List three stylistic characteristics of the Bronze Age statuettes from the Cyclades.

      a. Fragile feet that cannot support th figurine.

b. Almost flat and the human body is rendered in a highly schematized mannar.

c. Large simple triangles dominate the form(head and body itself)

2. The authors note that Cycladic figures resemble some 20th century sculpture. If you have a copy of the text that contains the chapter on 20th century art, look through it and write down two sculptures that you think most resemble them.

 MINOAN ART

 1.      Be sure you can identify each of the following:

      Labyrinth the “House of the Double Axes”

It’s a recurring motif in Minaon Palace, referring to sacrificial slaughter.

Minos king of Knossos, have exacted from Athens a tribute of youths and maidens to be fed to the Minotaur.

 Minotaur a creature half bull, and half man hused in a vast labyrinth.

 Wet or true fresco required rapid execution and great skiil in achieving quick(a method of painting) used by Minoans.

 2.      List four architectural characteristics of the Palace At Knossos:

      a. Mazelike complex

 b. The palace units grouped around the great rectangular court.

 c. Two long corridors(NS seperates official and ceremonial rooms from the magazines where wine , grain etc. were stored in large jars. ES separates living quarters and reception rooms)

 d. Interior staircases built around light and air wells to provide necessary illumination and ventilation.

 3.  In what way did the shape of a Minoan column differ from that of other columns? Draw a small  sketch of a Minoan column below. You may need to refer to Chapter 5 for more information on Greek columns.

      The painting method is different. Uses simple, light delicacy technique.

6.  What might explain the paintings using Minoan style and techniques that were found in Egypt?

      Egyptians emploted foreign paints or chose an Aegean subject.

7. What is particularly significant about the depiction of human anatomy in general, and the human faces in particular on The Harvester Vase (FIG. 4‑13)?

      It recorded the tension and relaxation of facial muscles with astonishing exactitude. First instances in the history of art of a sculptor showing interest in human anatomy.

8. List three characteristics of Minoan sculpture as seen in the Snake Goddess (FIG. 4-14).

       a. Prominently exposed breasts(symbolizes fertility).

 b. Holds snakes in her hands.

 c. Supports a leopard-like feline peacefully on her head.
