Tips for Giving a Class Presentation

Giving a class presentation can be the biggest fear for some people. Among those "some people", I am included as well. When I took my speech class in high school, it was like trying to survive from a tsunami. However, I managed to find myself enjoying the class after realizing what I essentially need to make a successful speech. It was confidence. Yes, confidence is absolutely the biggest, the most important key to a successful speech. Self-confidence can be built with affirmations and positive thinkings. It can also be built by preparing your speech effectively so that you will know what you are going to talk about. Here are some tips for giving a class presentation:

  • Never, Never, read out the slides. You should look over your presentation before the actual presentation day. Be ready and think what you are going to say in front of the class.
  • Transfer some of the informations from the slide to a notecard. It's much better than reading out the slides! This is what notecards are for.
  • Speak up! If you think you're going to stammer, take a deep breath or a short pause.
  • If you really can't look at the audience, look at the wall (or any objects) in front of you for a few seconds. They wouldn't know where you're looking at anyway.
  • Be entertaining. Try to be humorous and just have fun.
  • Avoid the 'um', 'ah', and 'so....yeah'. Replace those with a short pause. The pause may seem a bit awkward, but the audience will bearly notice it.
  • PRACTICE makes you perfect. This also allows you to be more confident about yourself.
  • If possible, volunteer to do the speech first. This will calm you a little bit. It is better than being called and all-shocked.
